The day before yesterday we already had it from the food supplies... so let's move on to the kitchen and food right away and dedicate ourselves to the freezer. This is a task I normally do 1x a year, but under the special circumstances, now might be a good time to do it. A defrosted freezer has the side benefit of using less electricity and keeping the contents even colder. And this is how we proceed:
- Switch off the freezer and empty it completely. Store the items in a cool bag or cool box. If you don't have one, take them outside in the shade.
- See if it has any expired items. If so, you don't necessarily have to throw them away. You can also try to use the food in the next 1-2 days.
- Some freezers have a defrost function... We don't.... I know the following "hacks": You can put a bowl of hot water in the freezer or stuff towels in if you have a bit more patience. These will then soak up all the melt water. I like to help with the hairdryer... you can place a large baking tray on the floor in front of the freezer to catch the water. In any case, do not poke around with sharp objects.
- Clean everything thoroughly, e.g. with vinegar water.
- Sort everything by category and put everything away again. Ideally, you can use a separate drawer for each category. Remember to label everything and date everything in the future if it doesn't have one yet....
- Switch the freezer back on and, as always, explain the new order to the family or flatmates.
Voila, that's it...
I won't blog about the weekend, but if you get bored, there's always plenty to do in the kitchen... e.g. clean the oven again (leave the cleaning product to work overnight), descale the coffee machine and/or kettle (follow the manufacturer's instructions), clean the microwave (I know a great "hack" for this: put 1 bowl of water with half a lemon in it. Set to approx. 1 min. Remove the bowl and simply wipe dry. Smells great and everything is clean.
