Cleaning out books - tips for tidying up your bookshelf

I think this project makes a lot of sense at the moment for two reasons.

  1. You might discover some great books at home that you've wanted to read for a long time but never found the time.
  2. it's clear that we'll only be spending our evenings at home over the next few weeks... why not pick up a great book... a welcome change from the "boob tube" and YouTube and co.

Books make a room cosy on the one hand, but a bookcase that is too full quickly looks untidy, everything gets dusty and you lose the overview.

Here's how to bring more order to your bookshelf:

  • If you're a book nerd and have an extremely large number of books, go shelf by shelf or section by section, otherwise the task becomes overwhelming.
  • first go through your flat and see if you have single books or small stacks of books lying around... take them to the shelf
  •  Take all the books off the shelf and clean it thoroughly.
  •  When you empty the books, you sort them by category, similar to the library, for example: crime fiction, biography, novels, photo books, travel guides, children's books, etc.
  •  take each book in your hand and ask yourself the following questions: does this book make me happy? Will I read this book again? Books that you enjoyed but won't read a second time can move on. Maybe a friend or a relative will be happy about it... Books that don't make you happy anyway or that you will never look at again can logically also go. Donate the discarded books to a charity or bring them to Broki.
  •  Additional tip: if you borrow books from the library from time to time (unfortunately not right now during the shut-down), the library books are a category of their own, i.e. they get their own corner on the shelf. It already happened to us with the children's books that we desperately searched for a book everywhere for weeks and almost had to pay for it... finally it was squeezed somewhere on the shelf so that we couldn't see it anymore...

I wish you all a good start to next week's shut-down. Cheer up and make the best of the situation. And don't forget ;), tidying up makes you happy!
